Leiria

Capital of the district, the city of Leiria is located at the confluence of two rivers, the Lis and the Lena.
The annual festival takes place between May 1st and May 25th.

1 - The Place Rodrigues Lobo

​

The main square of the city, a real meeting point for locals and visitors.

Located in beautiful and glamorous buildings, with brands of the world.

 

2 - The place Sant’Ana

​

Located in the heart of the historic center of Leiria, Piazza Sant'Ana is a very lively place in the city, mainly because of the beautiful Sant'Ana Market, a roaring cultural center offering interesting events all year round.
Several restaurants, shops and charming cafes.

3 - The Castle district

​

More than 800 years old, the Château de Leiria offers a breathtaking view of the city and its surroundings.

Every year in August: Music Festival called Entremuralhas (literally, in the walls of the castle).

4 - At the edge of the Lis River

 

A very pleasant area, ideal for walking by bike or on foot.
Here are two fantastic museums: the Leiria Museum and the Paper Mill Museum, two cultural references of the city. The museum of Leiria tells the history of the city, it also includes a large collection of archeology, sculpture and contemporary and ancient painting.

What to visit in Leiria ?

Leiria Castle / Castelo de Leiria

After the conquest of Leiria the first King of Portugal ordered its construction in 1135. It was intended to defend the southern border of his kingdom, since Santarém and Lisbon were still under Arab rule.
As soon as you reach Leiria, you only see him. Symbol of the Middle Ages, it keeps in these walls the remains of its history.

Leiria Cathedral/ Sé de Leiria 

Built in 1559, Leiria Cathedral is a magnificent and sober Mannerist and Baroque style building.

The covent of Santo Agostinho / Convento de Santo Agostinho

Founded in 1232 the convent has a church, a cloister, a former seminary. The church is open, and hosts a multitude of cultural events (exhibitions, concerts ...)

Museum of the Paper Mill / Museu do Moinho de Papel

Discover the traditional arts and crafts of the region, including mills of wheat, corn and rye, olive oil production and paper production.

Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Incarnation /

Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Encarnação

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Incarnation is located on Monte de São Gabriel, in the eastern part of the city.
It is a pilgrimage church that was built in the 16th century.
