But what does the Portuguese flag mean?

A bit of general culture today, find out what is the meaning of our beautiful Portuguese flag !

The flag has a symbolism both republican and nationalist. It is composed of two lists, green and red and a coat of arms. His colors have different representations:

- Green represents the hope of the Portuguese people and is associated with the republican revolt of January 31, 1891.

- The red represents the fight and the blood of all those who died in defense of the Portuguese nation.

- The armillary sphere, in yellow, was an important astronomical instrument during the era of discoveries being still a symbol of the Manueline architecture visible in the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos and in the Tower of Belém in Lisbon.

The Portuguese shield in the center presents five small shields, which represent the wounds of Jesus Christ during the crucifixion and which have as symbol the gratitude of D. Afonso Henriques for the divine victory during their battles in the conquest of Portugal.

The seven surrounding castles are considered a symbol of Portuguese victories over the Moorish enemies during the reign of Alfonso III, who conquered seven enemy fortresses during the conquest of the Algarve, completed in 1249.
